A Consumer Proposal is a debt relief solution that allows you to reduce your debt by up to 80%, and repay it without interest.

For many Canadians who are struggling with debt, bankruptcy is not the only option. A Consumer Proposal may be a better solution for becoming debt free. At Spergel, you’ll work with a Licensed Insolvency Trustee who will take the stress out of dealing with your debt. The Trustee will create an alternate payment plan that you can afford, and then present this offer to your creditors. Once your offer is accepted (over 99% are), it becomes a legally binding agreement managed by your Trustee.

Benefits of a
Consumer Proposal:

  • Allows you to keep your assets
  • Reduces the amount you pay back on your debts by up to 80%
  • Stops collection calls
  • Immediately ends wage garnishments
  • Immediately freezes interest and penalties on your debts
  • Avoids bankruptcy

Who is eligible for a
Consumer Proposal?

  • You must be a Canadian resident
  • Your unsecured debt* must be between $6,000 and $250,000
  • You must be able to repay a portion of your debts

*Unsecured debt is debt not backed by collateral (like a mortgage or car loan). This could include credit cards, lines of credit, certain loans or unpaid bills.

What you need
to know about

Filing bankruptcy is a big step but it does not have to be an overwhelming one. At Spergel, we have been helping Canadians through personal bankruptcy for 30 years, and we will guide you through each step.

Bankruptcy is a legal process that you enter into that allows you to release your debts and protects you from your creditors. Most unsecured debts such as credit cards, payday loans, lines of credit and tax debts may be included in a bankruptcy. Government student loans may also be included in a bankruptcy if you have been out of school for a minimum of 7 years.

Consumer Proposal
vs. Bankruptcy

A consumer proposal gives you the flexibility to ensure your monthly payments fit into your budget. Unlike in a bankruptcy where payments are determined solely based on income, a proposal fixes your monthly payment. You decide what you can afford that offers a fair return to your creditors – based on your current earnings, not your future ones.
